Cleaning AC/R systems: why it’s so important do it regularly
During the lockdown, we have learned many different things such as the proper procedures for cleaning and disinfecting A/C systems.

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (1) has shared results from a research conducted in China by the Guangzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention about an outbreak found in a local restaurant which was equipped with an A/C system. By admission of the same Chinese doctors, the research shows some limitation because it wasn’t possible to recreate the same conditions as those in the restaurant, possibly due to the variability of the condition of the A/C system.
Over time, air conditioners can accumulate particles that can negatively affect the people’s health who stay in rooms or live in houses with an A/C system. So, experts in air conditioning installation and maintenance (2) and scientists from Istituto Superiore di Sanità (the Italian institution for public health research, control, advice, documentation and training) [3] recommend to disinfect A/C systems with regularity. Adequate ventilation and regular refresh of air in domestic and non-sanitary spaces (offices, shops, etc.) are important to limit the spread of viruses, bacteria, moulds and other microorganisms. Indeed, they can pollute the air released into the interiors and generate infections or diseases. In particular, filters in an A/C system are a first point of accumulation of not-hygienic particles which might then be diffused if not adequately removed affecting the health of the air cooled or heated by the systems itself.
Sima – Società italiana di medicina ambientale – is an Italian NPO whose purpose is the protection of human health. It suggests cleaning and sanitizing all the A/C system’s components (4): certain kinds of interventions require the help of specialized technicians (as in the case of the external motors, positioned on the balconies or on the roofs).
